Student Employment Wage Classifications

The State of California initiated plans to increase the minimum wage to $15.00 per hour by January 1, 2022. To ensure compliance with these new regulations, Career Planning & Resources (CP&R), which oversees student employment, and Human Resources developed standard wage classifications for all on-campus student employment positions. In reviewing the fiscal impact of these increases, we will merge the current three student wage classifications into two classifications.This allows the College to project wage increases for the next five years. Senior staff has reviewed and approved the following wage classifications to be put into effect August 29, 2017.
  • Student Assistant I – $11.00
  • Student Assistant II – $11.50
In rare cases, supervisors may request a special wage at $12.50 per hour for consideration based on responsibilities that far exceed those outlined within the existing wage classifications.

Request for Student Employment

Complete the Request for Student Employment annually for each student employment position in your department. Requests may take 3-5 business days to process. Once approved, you will receive a partially completed Personnel Action Form (PAF) and then your positions will be posted in Handshake, Scripps’ central online job board for students.

To hire a student for your open position, please complete and submit a PAF to Human Resources. New hires (any student who has not worked for Scripps in any capacity in the last 12 months) must complete the new hire paperwork, which will be sent to them once the PAF is submitted.

Notice to Students

Student employment experiences offer students a double incentive: earn money to help meet college expenses while gaining valuable job experience.  In the competitive job market, employers value work experience among new graduates, an many on-campus departments hire students as employees.

Federal Work-Study (FWS) eligibility is determined by the Office of Financial Aid. For specific questions about your federal work-study award, contact Julia Sundstrom. Note that your FWS status does not guarantee you a job.  You are responsible for the job search process including researching, applying, and interviewing for the positions.

New Hire Paperwork

If you have not worked at Scripps College within the past 12 months, you will need to complete New Hire Paperwork. Once your supervisor submits a Personnel Action Form (PAF) on your behalf, you will receive an email from Human Resources with a link prompting you to complete your hiring paperwork online. Please make sure you have your I-9 documents ready to bring to HR to submit after you have completed the digital paperwork.

CP&R provides a centralized online database called Handshake  to post all on- and off-campus jobs including work-study, non-work-study, and internship positions.
